The province of Crotone, which came into being relatively recently in 1992, contains has some areas of outstanding natural beauty and a number of archaeological sites, including the largest marine protected area of Italy (Capo Rizzuto), the Castle of Santa Severina and Le Castella, an Aragonese fortification. It stretches from the Ionian Sea to the Sila mountain range and includes municipalities in which the Arbëresh language is spoken. Cirò PDO - the most famous wine in Calabria, with an EU protected designation of origin - is produced around Crotone, the ancient Kroton of Magna Graecia.
