Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, on the Baltic Sea coast, is the least populous German state. Almost two-thirds of the land area is used for agriculture. Tourism is an important economic factor: with its numerous islands, seaside resorts and lakes in the interior, the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern is a popular tourist destination. Another important pillar of the economy is the maritime industry, which includes shipbuilding, logistics and marine and offshore engineering. The cities of Greifswald and Rostock are also home to traditional universities.
