The German capital is also the third smallest federal state in the Republic. The city state with almost 3.8 million inhabitants boasts a wide range of cultural attractions and many sights, making it a very popular city break destination. With its universities, research institutes, young companies and international firms, Berlin is a popular place to study and work, especially among young people. Traditional industries, such as electrical and mechanical engineering, are also important. Berlin’s largest employers are Deutsche Bahn and the university hospital, ‘the Charité’. Berlin is also a city with a lot of greenery and numerous bodies of water that offer residents a variety of local recreational opportunities: the Spree, the Havel and several other rivers flow through the city. There are also over a dozen lakes. Over 20 % of Berlin is made up of water conservation areas, most of which are also designated as nature reserves.
