This former kingdom bordering Poland and the Czech Republic used to be a major centre of the mining industry, with which the region and its people have been associated since the Middle Ages. Whereas the importance of the traditional industry is declining, Saxony has new leading sectors in the form of the automotive, microelectronics, mechanical engineering and equipment industries, and is enjoying strong economic growth. The number of universities in the region exceeds the national average, and there are numerous non-university research establishments there too. While the populations of the cities of Leipzig and Dresden are expected to increase significantly by 2030, the region’s total population is expected to fall slightly.
