The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is a city-state: the second-largest German city is also the second-smallest federal state. The Elbe and Alster rivers flow through Hamburg, as do numerous canals: in total, there are 2500 bridges in Hamburg – more than any other European city. Hamburg also includes the North Sea islands of Neuwerk, Scharhörn and Nigehörn in the Hamburg Wadden Sea, which has been designated a national park. From an economic point of view, Hamburg is the leading shipping and logistics centre in northern Europe and an important centre for the European civil aviation industry. Tourism, too, plays an important role in Hamburg’s economy. Many jobs are linked to the port; it is Germany’s largest and the third largest in the EU. Aviation, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering are other important industries.] Hamburg is a media city as well: 23 000 publishing houses, broadcasters, and film and IT companies are based there.
