Saarland is primarily known for being where the borders of Germany, Luxembourg and France meet, as well as for its historical mining industry and steel industry. While the mining era came to an end in 2012, the steel industry and both the automotive and automotive parts industries are the backbone of the region’s economy today. Despite having a comparatively low per capita income and an unemployment rate of around 6%, Saarland has the highest rate of home ownership of all the German states. The region boasts many high-end restaurants. About half the population of Saarland lives in rural communities.
