The history of the city state of Bremen, comprising the conurbations of Bremen and Bremerhaven, has been shaped by its proximity to the North Sea and its location on the River Weser. The marine economy has been, and still is, of major importance although shipbuilding activity has declined in recent years. Bremen-based businesses range from SMEs to large-scale industrial companies, with the automotive and aerospace sectors among those represented. One of Germany’s leading locations for industry, the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen has experienced above-average GDP growth, and large numbers of people from other Federal States commute to work there. There remains, however, a substantial level of local unemployment and the poverty risk is relatively high.
