Due to its favourable location and its four seaports, Flanders is a gateway to Europe. As a result, the region’s economy is open and export oriented. Educational institutions are also an important asset as a source of knowledge and research. Flanders is highly urbanised with around 6.7 million inhabitants and a population density of almost 500 inhabitants per km². Safeguarding the scarce open space and climate proofing the many cities and municipalities are important challenges.
