Ústí nad Labem, a regional city of almost 100 000 inhabitants, lies in northern Bohemia in a valley at the confluence of the Elbe and Bílina rivers. It is a hub for lignite mining and the chemical industry, an important railway, road and river junction and a university town. Its industrial past is associated with a relatively high unemployment rate and environmental pollution. This only started to improve at the start of the new millennium with the reconstruction of the city.
