Situated in the Rhaetian Alps, a third of the province lies within the Stelvio National Park and the Orobie Valtellinesi regional park. Sondrio Province is also home to 50 Natura 2000 sites, established to protect and preserve local biodiversity. Sondrio is the least industrialised province in Lombardy, and tourism and services are the mainstays of its economy. In 2016, some 17 % of the province’s firms operated in the farming sector, and traditional local products include terrace-grown wines, milk and cheeses, bresaola and honey. In 2021, the number of companies set up by women, young people and foreign citizens increased in Sondrio Province, bucking the overall regional trend.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
High-Altitude Cycle Route
Around EUR 600 000 from the European Regional Development Fund have been allocated for the development of a high-altitude cycling route (1 900 m above sea level). Specifically, the project aims to improve existing routes and create a link with shelters and mountain pastures around a circuit.
Restoration and valorisation of the Oga Fortress
The European Union has contributed EUR 850 000 (50 % of the total cost), to the restoration and upgrade works at the Forte di Oga and its surroundings. The aim of the maintenance and conservation works is to improve the services available at the site and visitors’ experience of it.
Mind Foods Hub
With a contribution of more than EUR 2 million (50 % of the total), the EU is supporting the ‘Mind Foods Hub’ project, which sees agri-food research as a driver of innovation, development and social responsibility. During the first phase, 15 pilot plants were identified, including the Valtellina purple potato, which were considered relevant for the development of more sustainable agronomic approaches.
Alps in Movement, Movement in the Alps
The ‘Alps in Movement, Movement in the Alps’ project benefited from more than EUR 1.6 million of EU funding to promote the natural and cultural resources of the Bregaglia-Valchiavenna-Moesa-Ticino area through the creation of a geo-cultural trail.
Bernina Terra Glacialis
The Bernina Terra Glacialis project was concerned with awareness of the impact of climate change on the environment and on life in Italo-Swiss Alpine communities. EU financial support, which covered more than 75 % of the total cost, made it possible to monitor the Bernina glacier and study new strategies and professions related to cultural and environmental heritage.
