With just under 595 000 inhabitants, the North Denmark Region is one of the country’s most sparsely populated areas. With water on all sides, fishing has always been an important activity; one of Europe’s leading fish auction houses is located at Hanstholm. The region is known for its wild nature and, because of its location, is often exposed to harsh North Sea storms. Inland, there is both large-scale agriculture and heavy industry. On the basis of that diversity and location, North Denmark is aiming to take on a new role in the climate transition process and as an innovative region for the benefit of its citizens.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

CO2Vision

CO2 is the focal point of North Denmark’s CO2Vision business beacon. The initiative brings together core actors in North Denmark industry and business support bodies, involving visions for building carbon infrastructure and specific carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) projects, in order to turn North Denmark into a pioneering CCUS region. The EU’s regional fund has provided support for development of the initiative.

CO2Vision - skills

In connection with the CO2Vision initiative, the EU is supporting separately, under the Social Fund, a subproject to build up the right skills. This will ensure that there is a skilled labour force to match the expected growth in the sector.

Cross-Cultural Project on Deafblindness

With support from Erasmus+, the North Denmark Region is heading up an experience-sharing project focusing on increasing awareness and knowledge about deafblindness. In particular, the project aims to support students with deafblindness, as well as professionals working with deafblind people, especially within education. The project also seeks to increase the general public’s knowledge of deafblindness. 

Green resource eco-systems in Northern Denmark

The GRØN project has pursued a cross-regional aim to support small and medium-sized enterprises' energy and resource savings, especially by identifying potential for symbiosis with other firms. This has included screening, facilitation of collaboration, consulting services and constructive dialogue regarding business models, as well as access to a digital resource exchange.

JadeCare

The North Denmark Region bears responsibility for its hospitals and therefore, together with the Steno Diabetes Center in the region, joined the JadeCare project. Under the project, partners across the EU share experience regarding digitalisation and the use of health data in order to establish an integrated set-up within the healthcare system’s specialisations and departments for the benefit of individual citizens.

AddSmart - The European Digital Innovation Hub of North Denmark

North Denmark has long been a pioneering region in telecommunications and digitalisation and was the first Danish region to establish a regional digital innovation hub, which became the springboard for the AddSmart digital hub in North Denmark. AddSmart focuses on manufacturing firms and works to spread knowledge and build capacity for the deployment of industry 4.0 technologies in the sector.
