Gorizia and its province have a striking variety of landscapes and a wealth of history. Grado and its magnificent lagoon are the highlight of the coastal area, both as a destination for seaside tourism and as the site of two nature reserves. The Karst plateau, which has a sad history as the scene of First World War battles, offers views of limestone landscapes covered by Mediterranean vegetation. Grado, a true border town, still has many features which hark back to its Austro-Hungarian past under the Habsburg monarchy, while Monfalcone is known for its shipyards. The area is world famous for its magnificent wines from the Collio hills, which have been granted the EU ‘Collio Goriziano PDO’ quality label.
