There are 13 municipalities in North Karelia, five of which are towns. The population is just under 163 000. The county’s main strength is forestry research. Other important sectors are mining, tourism, agriculture and food production. In January 2022, unemployed jobseekers accounted for 12% of the labour force, the highest rate in the country. The regional programme is focused on smart specialisation, renewable industry, climate proofing, accessibility and resident well-being. Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine has affected the region in many ways, as approximately 10% of its companies’ exports went to Russia.
