Tampere is known for Finnish rock and ice hockey, and its history as an industrial city is visible in the red-brick buildings by the Tammerkoski rapids that flow through the city centre, where a board mill still operates. Many of the other buildings in the local landscape have been converted into offices, artisan workshops and museums. Tampere’s economy has had a focus on services and high-tech companies since industry moved out of the city centre.
