Jyväskylä is where the first Finnish language lyceum and teacher training seminary was established in the mid-1800s, and it is still known as a student city. One of the lyceum’s students was the internationally renowned Alvar Aalto, Finland’s most famous architect, who later designed the university’s main building. The aim of the urban strategy is to reinforce Jyväskylä as an attractive education city and research centre with top expertise. The Capital of Sport in Finland is a new strategy point: the aim is to make Jyväskylä the most attractive centre of expertise for exercise, sport and health in the Nordic countries.
