‘Things are better here’ – this is the motto of the district in Unterfranken which boasts eight spa resorts. Since 2021, the spa town has been one of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites recognised as the ‘Great Spa Towns of Europe’. In addition to tourism and wellness, the construction industry plays a major role in the region. The district lies on the southern edge of the Rhön Mountains and, for several years now, its unemployment rate has been below the German national average. By 2036, the population is expected to decrease and the average age is set to rise.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
"We make it nicer for ourselves"
As part of the wider project ‘Wir machen’s uns schöner’ and supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF), various objects could be seen in a new light thanks to energy-saving and targeted lighting. In addition, so-called ‘Gobo’ lights were installed, shining patterns onto the ground to encourage people to follow the lights on a walk through the town and explore the old town square.
LEADER projects
The Bad Kissingen district also benefits from LEADER funding. LEADER is an EU programme to support grass-roots initiatives. In the district, these funds have supported the creation of a register to map solar and green roof potential, a theatre lorry for the Schloss Maßbach theatre and the installation of thematic elements along the Rhönexpress railway cycle route.
Rhön-Saale start-up and innovation center
The Rhön-Saale Start-Up and Innovation Centre receives funding from the European Social Fund Plus (ESF+). For example, between 2015 and 2022, it received more than EUR 900 000 in support for its extra-occupational training courses in the hospitality and healthcare sectors.
Practical class at the Anton Kliegl Middle School
The European Social Fund Plus (ESF+) supports, among other actions, training measures to enhance employability. For example, the vocational education programme at Anton-Kliegl secondary school in Bad Kissingen receives around EUR 33 000 each year in funding. This project is aimed at young people for whom it is difficult to obtain a school-leaving qualification and is designed to improve their prospects of securing an apprenticeship place.
