The district of Rhine-Neckar in north-west Baden-Württemberg is made up of 54 towns and municipalities, and had a population of around 550 000 in 2022. In addition to metalworking and chemical industry firms, there are also major software, precision engineering and financial services companies in the district. The district’s rural areas are dominated by farming and forestry: the area around Schwetzingen is one of Germany’s main asparagus-growing regions. The Rhine-Neckar district is part of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region – a public-private partnership – and it has been twinned with the county of Somogy in Hungary since 1995.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Conveyor systems for pallets
CCI Fördertechnik GmbH in Waibstadt develops and produces conveyor systems for pallets. The systems are equipped with lift technology so that they can be used in high-bay warehouses. The extension to implement the company’s innovation and growth strategy was subsidised to the tune of EUR 200 000 from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Expansion of the local heating network
In the municipality of Malsch, the aim is to reduce CO2 emissions by around 70 % per year. To this end, the local heating network was expanded as part of the ‘zeozweifrei NAH.WÄRME’ project, maximising the use of renewable energy and combined heat and power generation. The project, which was completed in October 2021, was funded by the EU, which provided over EUR 760 000.
Establishment of a multi-generational playground in Sinsheim
The construction of a multi-generational playground in Sinsheim was co-financed with EU funds totalling around EUR 180 000 via the LEADER programme. The playground, which is due to open in 2024, is just one of a total of 61 LEADER projects that were funded between 2015 and 2022 in the Kraichgau region – which covers the Rhine-Neckar district as well as two other districts.
