The district of Rhine-Neckar in north-west Baden-Württemberg is made up of 54 towns and municipalities, and had a population of around 550 000 in 2022. In addition to metalworking and chemical industry firms, there are also major software, precision engineering and financial services companies in the district. The district’s rural areas are dominated by farming and forestry: the area around Schwetzingen is one of Germany’s main asparagus-growing regions. The Rhine-Neckar district is part of the Rhine-Neckar Metropolitan Region – a public-private partnership – and it has been twinned with the county of Somogy in Hungary since 1995.
