The Tyrolean Oberland region comprises the districts of Imst and Landeck, including the well-known Ötztal, Piztal, Kaunertal, Paznuntal and Stanzertal valleys. Despite its limited population density, this region bordering Italy and Switzerland boasts an impressive rate of development and economic performance. This is largely due to tourism and the rising number of overnight visitors in the winter season after the Corona crisis. The strong service sector employs 70% of the labour force and is closely associated with the ski resorts and the well-developed hotel industry.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Forests and climate change adaptation

The ‘Klimafitter Waldproject’ in the district of Landeck is raising public awareness, by means of school workshops for instance, of the effects of climate change on endangered tree species. Landeck’s woodland is the driest in all of Tyrol. The project was implemented by the Tyrol Forest Maintenance Association. It cost EUR 233 700 and was co-financed by the ERDF to the tune of 50%.

Innovation and impulse center for business start-ups

Support was also provided for the Business Start-up Innovation and Assistance Centre in the district of Imst.
The centre aims to establish and foster a mentality and culture focused on start-ups in the region. Half of the project’s budget of some EUR 42 000 was covered by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). 

INTERREG Rat Terra Raetica

The 2021-2027 funding period will see the Tyrol–South Tyrol–Trentino region benefit from the INTERREG V-A Italy-Austria programme.  Between 2014 and 2020, EUR 4 million was provided by the INTERREG Council Terra Raetica programme for cross-border cooperation, mobility, climate and energy policy, the economy and the environment in the border triangle formed by the Tyrolean Oberland, Vinschgau and Engadine.

KLAR - Hiking in Kaunertal in the sign of climate change

The Kaunertal region’s ‘KLAR! – ‘Climate Change Adaptation Model Region’ project provides hikers in the Kaunertal with advice on hiking trails and mountain tours that changes according to weather conditions. The project cost some EUR 50 000, half of which was provided by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
