The Bucharest-Ilfov Development Region, which is made up of the city of Bucharest and the surrounding county of Ilfov, is the country’s most prosperous and economically developed region. GDP per capita at purchasing power parity in Bucharest-Ilfov has risen by more than 80% in the past decade, but the region’s infrastructure has not developed at the same rapid pace as its economy. Although Romania’s transport routes converge here, Bucharest is the only EU capital city to lack an orbital motorway and regularly ranks as one of Europe’s most congested cities.
