Bragança is Portugal’s northernmost district capital. It was made a city in 1464 and its origins date back to before the Roman occupation. Its geographical isolation has allowed it to keep alive the cultural traditions of the Caretos and the Winter Festivities, and ancient influences such as those from Spain, present in the Mirandese language and its sub-dialects, but also breeds indigenous to the Terras de Miranda, such as the Mirandese cow and donkey and the Porco Bísaro pig, as well as the rich culture and gastronomy: cereals, bread, olive oil, honey... Despite the waning population, tourist interest has increased and not even the ‘nine months of winter and three of hell’ have been able to deter visitors from coming to Bragança.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Silkhouse
In its history, the ‘Casa da Seda’ has been a grain mill and a silk dyeing works, a reminder of the times when Bragança was an important centre for silk production. Between 2016 and 2019, the Silkhouse project turned the building into a smart and self-sustainable home, using the latest energy sustainability technologies. With 85 % co-financing from the ERDF, the project helped promote interest in museums and science in the region.
Rehabilitation of old EPAC silos for Museum Portuguese Language
The idea for a Portuguese Language Museum in Bragança emerged in 2009, but it wasn’t until 2019 that work began on converting the EPAC grain silos, which host the new museum. The renovation costs of approximately EUR 10 million were 50 % financed by the ERDF.
Bragmaia
Founded in 2005, Bragmaia is a Bragança-based company involved in designing and producing street furniture, playgrounds and sports equipment. EU funds have helped the company to reach markets as far away as Angola and North America and to produce and create its own products. The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)financed a number of projects totalling EUR 2 280 688.
Road connection from Bragança to Puebla de Sanabria
After decades of deadlock, the Recovery and Resilience Plan (RRP) finally made it possible to improve the connection between Bragança and Spain (Puebla de Sanabria). The project strengthens cross-border connections and reduces journey times between the regions, while also improving road safety. The EUR 16 million investment is financed entirely by EU funds.
