Drenthe, the Netherlands

Drenthe is a province that is sparsely populated (approx. 492 000 inhabitants) and rural, with areas of natural beauty. The economy is chiefly made up of small and medium-sized enterprises, including agricultural holdings; they are therefore the driving force behind the Drenthe economy. Important sectors are services (commercial activities and care), industry (including sensor technology) and agriculture. The economy grew more slowly in 2021 than in most other provinces, and the unemployment rate was 2.9% in 2022.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

AGIT

For Drenthe, cooperation with neighbouring regions is important as a way of addressing cross-border problems and stimulating the regional economy. The EU is helping with this. EUR 450 million is available to subsidise projects in the region straddling the border between the Netherlands and Germany between 2021 and 2027. One such project is AGIT, which stands for Agro Green Innovation and Technology. It involves the development of agricultural innovations reducing energy demand through light-weight designs and electrical propulsion systems powered by hydrogen from carbon-free farm sources.  

GROENE H2 VERSNELLER

A project to build an electrolyser for the green hydrogen accelerator, the aim being to develop an innovative electrolyser so as to contribute to the transition to renewable energy through green hydrogen. 

Dripwise

Het project DripsGewijs ontwikkelt, realiseert en test een druppelberegeningsplanner voor aardappel- en uientelers. Met de planner is het mogelijk om gewassen altijd van voldoende water te voorzien en tegelijkertijd weinig of geen water te verspillen.

Chemport Industry Campus Emmen

In het licht van slimme specialisatie hebben de belangrijkste triple helix partners in Emmen al meerdere jaren gekozen voor een focus op groene chemie. Het chemische cluster is al jaren aan de weg aan het timmeren en wint via diverse projecten aan concurrentiekracht. Denk daarbij onder meer aan de ontwikkeling van composteerbaar touw, maar ook gemengde filamenten die op vele manieren kunnen worden gebruikt, onder meer in 3D printers.
