Luxembourg, also called Luxembourg City (to distinguish it from the country), is the capital of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and is the country’s largest city. On 1 January 2022, the city boasted a population of slightly over 128 000 people. Luxembourg is home to a number of EU institutions and agencies and is an extremely international city: over 70% of its residents are not Luxembourg citizens. The policy of cooperation between cities contributes to the cross-border framework of the Greater Region. Together, the cities of Luxembourg, Saarbrücken, Metz and Trier form the QuattroPole.

Beyond UNIVERSEH

To ensure the EU remains a leader in the space sciences sector, the aim of the ‘beyond UNIVERSEH’ project is to draw up a roadmap for the development of research policy for 2035, as well as a vision of the space sector for 2050.

ERA Chair in Mathematical Statistics and Data Science – SanDAL

Since it was founded in 2003, the University of Luxembourg has been actively involved in the European Research Area and in creating a European higher education and research area. Under the EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation, Horizon 2020, the university took part in 177 projects, including SanDal, which will set up a research group in mathematical statistics and data science.

Electrification of the City’s bus network

 EU investments in the city of Luxembourg have also included projects to accelerate the green transition, such as by decarbonising transport. Through the European Regional Development Fund and the REACT-EU funding programme, the aim of the ‘e-bus RGTR’ project is to gradually and fully electrify the fleet of public buses used for public transport in Luxembourg.
