The Province of Pavia, in south-western Lombardy, is split into two by the River Po. To the left of the river are the areas of Pavese and Lomellina; to the right is the Oltrepò Pavese, land of the wine bearing the same name – Oltrepò Pavese PDO – protected by the EU quality label. The plain which covers most of the area is very fertile and characterised by vineyards and cereal, fruit and beet cultivation. As regards industry, it is mostly SMEs that operate in the province, particularly in the electrical, chemical, hectographic, leather and shoe sectors. The services sector is also well-developed, especially in the more populous built-up areas.
