Indre-et-Loire is often referred to as La Touraine, a reference to the historic province to which the area once belonged. Half of all Indre-et-Loire residents live in ‘Tours Métropole Val de Loire’, where 60% of the jobs in the department are located. The other half of the population is spread throughout the Loches and Chinon areas. Tourism, winegrowing (Vouvray and Chinon) and research and innovation at the François Rabelais University in Tours are mainstays of the local economy.
