The province of Albacete has excellent road and rail connections, including the high-speed train line to Madrid and Alicante. Agriculture has traditionally been the mainstay of its economy, but in recent years, the province has developed significant capacity for generating electricity from renewable sources (wind, solar and photovoltaic). Its aviation industry is also growing, with an aeronautical park next to Albacete Airport and Los Llanos Air Base.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Renovation of seven care homes in the Albacete province

Support from the European Regional Development Fund has helped to refurbish seven elderly care homes in the province of Albacete, including in Hellín, Tobarra, Almansa, Villarobledo and Higueruela. The aim was to improve accessibility and make the homes more comfortable for the residents. 

Repopulating the Future

The ‘Repopulating the Future’ European exchange helped address the issue of rural depopulation from young people’s point of view. Together with peers from Bulgaria and Croatia, nine young residents of different Albacete municipalities took part in a range of activities aimed at tackling this issue 

Deployment of organic waste containers in Albacete

The roll-out of organic waste bins to the whole of the Albacete area was made possible with EU co-financing from the NextGenerationEU fund. A total of EUR 1.4 million was invested, which was 90% co-financed. 

Hellín’s Strategy of Integrated Sustainable Urban Development (EDUSI Hellín)

The Hellín Functional Area has seen numerous initiatives as part of the Sustainable and Integrated Urban Development Strategy (EDUSI Hellín). The initiatives have involved significant advances in information and communication technologies, energy efficiency, historical heritage, tourist infrastructure and social inclusion 

Dipualba Protects

The ‘Dipualba Protege’ project aims to help vulnerable people in rural areas of the province of Albacete improve their job prospects through a range of training pathways. The project, which in 2021 had provided training to 640 people, has a budget of EUR 10 million and is 80% co-financed by the European Social Fund.
