Administrative reforms and strategic cooperation can shift many borders and bring about name changes. Four south Danish municipalities can be characterised as fully Southern Jutlandish, however: Sønderborg, Aabenraa, Haderslev and Tønder. Located on or near the border with Germany, they have a close cultural and historical relationship which to this day calls for a sense of community and cooperation on a cross-border basis.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
WIFI4EU - Aabenraa
In 2019, Aabenraa Municipality received funding from the EU WiFi4EU pool by way of support for providing Wi-Fi coverage in public spaces. The EU grant covers the purchase and installation of equipment for Wi-Fi hotspots. A number of Danish municipalities have successfully applied for funding from the pool. In its application, Aabenraa focused on possible Wi-Fi sites at the marina, on the campus and at Padborg.
KK2.0
Under the Interreg project Kurskultur, the four Southern Jutland municipalities worked with public partners in Schleswig-Holstein, as well as with cultural and knowledge institutions in both Denmark and North Germany, to highlight the value of language comprehension and cultural understanding as necessary competencies in a dynamic border region. The project involved citizens through grants for cross-border microprojects to learn about each other’s language, history and culture and increase mobility.
CleanTechBlock
A new type of insulating brick made from recycled material is what Gråsten Teglværk intended to deliver with the help of the EU’s SME instrument. An idea the EU liked and has backed in two rounds – first for market analysis and then for demonstration purposes in the form of support for constructing an entire house out of CleanTechBlocks, where the core between two bricks consists of insulating foamed glass. The product requires fewer new resources and construction is even faster.
LIFE Wadden Sea Birds
Under a major LIFE project led by Tønder Municipality and with local support from the Tøndermarsken Initiative, an international bird sanctuary for meadow birds and wading birds in Tøndermarsken is being established in co-operation with farmers and landowners in the area. The 248-hectare project area, in the northern part of Margrethe Kog, will also form a reservoir area so to alleviate high water levels in Vidå creek when there is extreme precipitation.
Rural eHealth Facilitators
Nordfyn and Haderslev are pilot municipalities participating in the University of Southern Denmark’s REACT project. The project focuses on ensuring digital literacy for older people and vulnerable people, especially in rural areas, so that they are not cut off from digital care and healthcare services. This Erasmus+ project is developing learning resources for volunteers to help vulnerable citizens use new technologies and counter digital exclusion.
School Health in Europe for Active and Healthy Ageing
Projektet søger at systematisere indsatsen for bedre trivsel i skolen.
