The district of Saale-Orla-Kreis, located by the Thuringian Slate Mountains and shaped by the Saale and Orla rivers, is one of the most economically productive districts in Thuringia with over 5 300 businesses. The local economy prominently features manufacturing, agriculture and traditional trades and crafts. The district maintains a regional partnership with the Czech town of Cheb, amongst others. A great number of hiking routes, the Bleiloch dam and reservoir, and the Mödlareuth Deutsch-Deutsches Museum (memorial to the division of Germany) all make the district an attractive tourist destination.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
The Bleiloch Dam as part of the Natura 2000 network and the low water strategy
The hills by the Bleiloch dam are part of the EU’s Natura 2000 network of protected areas, which aims to ensure biodiversity in Europe. In addition, the dam is also part of Thuringia’s low water strategy, a companion to the state’s water protection programme for 2022-2027, which is supported by the European Regional Development Fund.
Reducing the proportion of female students without a school leaving certificate in Neustadt
Since 2015, the EU has been supporting projects in Thuringia aiming to reduce the proportion of students with no school-leaving qualifications. Initially, these projects were called ‘PINK’ and ‘PINK 2.0’ – now, individualised learning support is provided under ‘ILZE’. Between August 2018 and July 2021, PINK 2.0 at the mainstream secondary school in Neustadt an der Orla received more than EUR 400 000 from the European Social Fund.
THINKA in Lobenstein and Pößneck
The objective of the THINKA project is to improve the social and professional integration of disadvantaged people in the Bad Lobenstein and Pößneck area. This includes managing personal crises, solving day-to-day problems, improving employability and increasing independence. The European Social Fund is supporting the project with around EUR 300 000.
