Erfurt’s geographical location makes the city an important transport hub. As the capital of Thuringia, Erfurt is the seat of many regional administrative agencies. In medieval times, the city was an important centre of commerce and learning; today, manufacturing, services and retail trade are the mainstays of its economy. It is home to many firms working in the fields of microsystems and photovoltaics, mechanical engineering and plant construction, logistics, horticulture and the food industry. One of the city’s landmarks is the Krämerbrücke, the longest bridge in Europe which incorporates inhabited houses. Erfurt is also a university city, with many students studying pedagogics and theology.
