With a population of approximately 52 000, Emden is the largest city in East Frisia. With its seaport, Emden is home to its long-established shipyards ‘Emden Dockyard’ and ‘Nordseewerke’, in addition to automobile and wind power energy companies that value its location as a fright handling hub and production site for on- and offshore wind turbines. Since the seaport relies almost exclusively on renewable energy, it was awarded the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) certificate in 2017.

Support for research projects at the university of Emden/Leer
From 2015 to 2021, meanwhile, the EU granted almost EUR 785 000 from the European Regional Development Fund to Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences for 11 research projects.
Strengthen youth in the district in Emden
From 2019 to 2022, the EU allocated EUR 420 000 from the European Social Fund to the 'JUGEND STÄRKEN im Quartier' (Encouraging Youth in the Neighbourhood) project in Emden, which aims help unemployed and underqualified young people and adults to find an apprenticeship or job.
Renovation and energy refurbishment of the Festspielhaus (festival hall) am Wall in Emden
The EU contributed at least EUR 360 000 from the European Regional Development Fund towards the renovation and energy-efficient refurbishment of the Festspielhaus am Wall cultural centre in Emden.
Increasing the energy efficiency of the sewage treatment plant of Emden-Larrelt
The old combined heat and power plant at the Emden-Larrelt sewage treatment plant was replaced with the help of EUR 644 000 from the European Regional Development Fund with a more energy-efficient plant which has succeeded in generating more electricity while cutting CO2 emissions.
EXIST stipend for the project Safersea of the university of Emden/Leer
From April 2020 to March 2021, the EU provided Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences with EUR 77 000 in ‘EXIST’ start-up funding for ‘Safersea’, a project for research into a device able to localise containers on land and at sea.
Revitalisation of the festival hall am Wall in Emden
The EU provided some EUR 1.29 million in funding to help finance work to renovate the Festspielhaus am Wall cultural centre in Emden.
Ems Ports Agency and Stevedoring Beteiligungs GmbH & Co.KG
The EU provided EUR 3.3 million from the European Regional Development Fund. Ems Ports Agency and Stevedoring Beteiligungs GmbH & Co. KG to help finance work to expand its storage space for logistics and handling at both of its ports and provide new machinery.
Photovoltaic system for the Ostfriesische Landesmuseum at Emden
EU funding of EUR 1.15 million from the REACT-EU programme, which aims to help city centres bounce back from the effects of the pandemic, helped Emden install solar panels and greener facilities on the roof of the East Frisian State Museum, among other things.
