This traditional spa region with many historical monuments has the lowest number of inhabitants of any region of the Czech Republic and has been experiencing sustained population outflows. In terms of GDP per capita, it is the poorest region in the country. Tourism is important for this region, where multi-day spa stays and one-day cross-border visits from neighbouring Bavaria and Saxony are typical. It is the third most-visited region after Prague and the South Moravia Region.
