The capital of Styria Province has over 292 000 inhabitants and is Austria’s second largest city; it is also the largest city along the river Mur. With more than 60 000 students and numerous non-university research institutes, Graz is an important educational and research centre. The city also has a vibrant cultural life: Graz is a UNESCO City of Design and was European Capital of Culture in 2013. The old town of Graz was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
