The statistical cohesion region of Central Slovakia consists of the Žilina and Banská Bystrica regions. Both are characterised by very rugged terrain, which has an impact on opportunities for both agricultural production and transport connections, and settlement and industry are concentrated in individual valleys. Compared to neighbouring Western Slovakia, the area has lower employment rates and average earnings. The northern part of the region is economically stronger due to the presence of the automotive industry. Tourists can explore the wealth of mountains, caves and thermal springs.
