Viseu has always been an important town and was once the capital of the kingdom and the seat of the bishopric. Today, it is the seat of the municipality, district and diocese. It is one of the most populous towns in inland Portugal and is renowned as a good place to live. Viseu is known for the São Mateus fair, the Cavalhadas de Vildemoinhos procession, its religious buildings, and its folklore reflected in the legends of Viriatus and the Lusitanians. Surrounded by mountains and with three rivers flowing through the area (the Vouga, the Paiva and the Dão), Viseu is known as the ‘green pine’ town.
