Southeast Drenthe has been designated the country’s leading region for a green, bio-based chemicals industry by the government. In addition, synthetic fibre production is its industrial specialisation. In economic terms, Emmen is the most important city; it is the region’s largest industrial centre, a major logistics centre and the number two city for shopping in the north of the country. In addition, there are a number of beautiful nature conservation areas in this predominantly rural region.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Cross-border cultural network Natuurpark Veenland
South-East Drenthe maintains good relations with its German neighbours. The region was therefore awarded EU grants for the development of a German-Dutch tourism-related culture network. Eight attractions in the region, including the Narrow-Gauge Museum, Veenpark and Van Gogh House, ensured that all their material was available in German, Dutch and English. New cycle paths were also built so as to allow visitors to discover the area safely.
Pilot garden agri(rest) streams
Sustainability is an EU priority, and related projects in the region have therefore received grants. One case in point is a project to develop and operate a living lab in connection with biomass from agricultural residue streams. In the lab, firms are drawn together to test and develop innovations concerning green chemicals, composites and other materials (e.g. furniture made from milled cocoa shells).
Nature protection areas in Southeast Drenthe
South-east Drenthe has a number of special nature reserves that are protected by special European rules. One such example is Bargerveen in Emmen, which is noted for its unique grasslands. That allows everyone – people and animals alike – to enjoy the landscapes.
A just climate transition
The Just Transition Fund is an EU fund for regions whose economies are highly dependent on fossil fuels. It ensures that those regions, too, can tackle climate transition in an equitable manner. The partnership set-up between Emmen and the province of Groningen has received EUR 330 million. The money is being used for projects relating inter alia to worker upskilling and retraining, green energy and research.
