The phasing out of natural gas extraction in Rest of Groningen is causing substantial economic decline (-15 % in 2023). However, this has not prevented the region from establishing a strong position in the sectors of health/welfare and ICT (city of Groningen) and green energy and logistics (the Eemshaven). The city of Groningen is the heart of the region; that is where the most amenities and jobs are to be found. Thanks to the many students, it is also a youthful city; with a rate of unemployment (4.9% in 2022) which is higher than in the rest of the region and in other cities in the Netherlands.
