The province of Nuoro extends from the central-eastern coast of Sardinia almost as far as its west coast. It is a predominantly hilly and mountainous region which has preserved its natural environment and traditions better than other regions. Agri-food production plays an important role in its economy: the province's strengths in that regard include horticulture, wines such as Cannonau di Sardegna, which are protected by the European PDO (protected designation of origin) quality mark, and livestock and dairy products. Local industry is to be found close to the main population centres, while tourism drives the economy in the coastal resorts.
