The Regional Unit (RU) of Arta, with the legendary bridge of the same name, is a particularly mountainous area of great natural beauty. The stand-out features are the Tzoumerka massif with its vertical canyons and traditional villages, and the Amvrakikos lagoons, home to the Dalmatian Pelican, one of the rarest birds and the world’s largest aquatic bird with the ability to fly. This is also the birthplace of Nikolaos Skoufas, one of the founders of the Philike Eteria, and Georgios Karaiskakis, a general in the 1821 Greek War of Independence.
