The continents aside, Greenland is the world’s largest island. It is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. Given Greenland’s position between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, it comes as no surprise that fishing is its main industry, and fish is its main export. Greenland became a member of the EC when Denmark joined in 1973, but it withdrew in 1985 following a referendum that led to the signature of the Greenland Treaty. Since then, Greenland has been associated with the EU as one of the EU’s Overseas Countries and Territories. Greenland is important for the EU from a geostrategic point of view. It receives support from the EU budget in exchange for fishing quotas. It also has access to support from EU programmes and can apply for loans from the European Investment Bank.
