The district of Schwarzwald-Baar is situated in the south of Baden-Württemberg, on the border with Switzerland. Schwarzwald-Baar is also known as the ‘Quellenland’, or ‘land of springs’, owing to the numerous rivers which have their sources in the district, such as the Danube, Neckar, Brigach, Breg, Gutach, Elz, Schiltach and many others. Almost 90% of Schwarzwald-Baar is made up of woodland, meadows and farmland, and large parts of the district belong to the Southern Black Forest Nature Park. The local economy is primarily driven by small and medium-sized enterprises. Important manufacturing sectors include precision engineering, metrology, mechanical engineering, information technology and electrical engineering. The district also boasts around 1 300 family farms. The district of Schwarzwald-Baar is twinned with the Hungarian county of Bács-Kiskun.
