Surrounded by several areas of outstanding natural beauty, Derby lies on the banks of the river Derwent in south Derbyshire. A city of 256,000 inhabitants, Derby has a young population, with a median age (36.7) that is well below the national average. In terms of its economy, the city has longstanding links with the technical manufacturing sector, boosted by the presence of railroad manufacturer Bombardier and Rolls-Royce´s aero engine production plant. Unemployment levels, particularly among young people, meanwhile, are above the national average and pose a challenge for the city´s future development.
