Ljubljana is not only the political, academic, economic and cultural centre of Slovenia, but also a leader in implementing a sustainable development strategy. In 2016, Ljubljana was the first and so far only city in Central and South-Eastern Europe to be given the title ‘Green Capital of Europe’. The city’s vision for 2025 includes environmental protection, a sustainable mobility plan and sustainable energy, the implementation of urban green measures and the reorganisation of the transport network. Ljubljana’s efforts to reduce its negative impact on the environment and ensure people’s quality of life while at the same time increasing tourism have put it on the global map of green cities.
