Groningen has some 590 000 inhabitants and is the third-smallest province in the Netherlands. Over 40 % of them live in the capital of the same name. Most start-ups are also located there. Energy, digitalisation and health care are strong sectors. As a result of the development of ‘green chemistry’, offshore wind energy and data centres, there has also been a stunning increase in economic activity around the ports at Eemshaven and Delfzijl over the last 10 years. In addition, in the search for alternatives to natural gas the province is fully committed to green hydrogen.
