Marijampolė County is a region in south-western Lithuania bordering on Poland and the Kaliningrad Region. Other significant towns in the region include Vilkaviškis, Šakiai, Kazlų Rūda and Kybartai. Despite being home to just under 5% of the country's population, the county boasts well-developed trade and transport sectors. The per capita gross domestic product in 2021 was only around 59% of the national average, and the unemployment rate in 2022 (8.8%) was higher than the national average of 5.9%. Marijampolė County attracts less foreign direct investment than most Lithuanian regions
