Bjelovar is the capital of Bjelovar-Bilogora County and the region’s political, economic and cultural hub. Although it is the largest city in the county in terms of population, according to the latest census, the number of inhabitants has decreased by more than 10% compared to 2011. The Bjelovar area is characterised by its favourable transport position, clean environment, well-preserved nature and rich cultural heritage. Nevertheless, the tourist offer is poorly organised and insufficiently integrated with other economic sectors. Traditional agricultural production and processing industries are important for the town, and small and medium-sized enterprises are the main drivers of economic development.
