There are approximately 175 000 inhabitants in the region of Lapland. The problems that exist in a sparsely populated area, the high level of structural unemployment and the rising average age of the population pose challenges for the region. Industry, forestry, mining, tourism, reindeer herding, hunting and fishing are important sources of livelihood. The development themes in the regional programme are internationalisation, sustainable development, promoting a low-carbon lifestyle, digitalisation and support for the Sámi culture. The objective is to take good care of the pristine natural environment.
