Trier-Saarburg, the third-largest rural district in Rhineland-Palatinate in terms of surface area, comprises four towns and 100 municipalities. Because of its proximity to the three-country border, it has been subject to linguistic and cultural influences from Luxembourg and France and numerous artefacts testify to the fact that it was one of the oldest central European settlement areas. Tourism is one of the economic mainstays of the area, thanks to the diversity of the surrounding landscape, with the Hunsrück forests, the southern Eifel and the Moselle, Saar and Ruwer rivers. The growth in the population figures in several joint municipalities, which is unusual for rural areas, is largely attributable to the accessibility of job opportunities in nearby Luxembourg.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Increasing energy and resource efficiency
The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is helping small and medium-sized enterprises in Trier-Saarburg to develop greener production methods: a joinery in Longuichso was able to use around EUR 38 000 to switch to LED lighting and adopt further energy saving measures.
Ice reservoir for “Integrative School Project Schweich"
The special purpose association established for the Schweich Integrative School Project received an EU contribution of some EUR 625 000 to fit a school building with ice storage technology. The use of air and thermal collectors, thermal storage and heat pumps should enable an on-demand energy supply.
Increasing energy efficiency
In 2022, more than EUR 300 000 in EU funds went to a metal-processing company in Zemmer. Their new powder-coating system should bring down CO2 emissions and, more generally, help to modernise the site.
Barrier-free hiking trail on the Warsberg plateau
Around EUR 63 000 in EU funds was unlocked for the city of Saarburg to create a barrier-free hiking trail on the Warsberg Plateau.
Barrier-free connection between the historic old town of Saarburg and the Warsberg plateau
The European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) is helping to make tourist attractions barrier-free. For example, the city of Saarburg received a grant exceeding EUR 120 000 to ease access to the Warsberg ‘activity plateau’. Completed in 2022, the project included the construction of a lift for access to the chairlift station and the purchase of improved transport handles.
