The varied landscape characterising the Moselle valley and the Eifel and Hunsrück mountains to the north of Rhineland-Palatinate is integral to its economy. The steep slopes of the Moselle valley are ideally suited to its famous terraced vineyards, while the influx of visitors make Cochem-Zell one of the leading tourist destinations in Germany. Agriculture and forestry are important activities in Hunsrück and Eifel. As a German bioenergy region, the district derives all of its power from renewable energy, and has set itself the long-term goal of becoming CO₂-neutral.
