The Baltic coast, ‘Mecklenburgische Schweiz’ and Rostock heathland shape the region’s landscape. Shipbuilding supplies, wind power, tourism and healthcare are important sectors. Heiligendamm, which is a district of Bad Doberan, is considered to be Germany’s oldest seaside resort. Güstrow Palace, which takes its name after the town it lies in, is one of northern Europe’s most prominent Renaissance-style palaces.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Renovation of Güstrow Castle

The EU is putting around EUR 20 million from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) towards the restoration of Güstrow Castle. Over the last few years, parts of the gardens have been redone with EAFRD funding, in a manner that befits a listed building.

Sanitary and administrative buildings in the Kühlungsborn camping park

At Kühlungsborn camp site, sanitary and administrative buildings were built with European Regional Development Fund support. Allowing for camping throughout winter, this means that employment opportunities are no longer only seasonal.

Food bank Bad Doberan

The 'Tafel Bad Doberan' food bank was set up with European Social Fund support. The association that runs it has been distributing food to people in need since December 2016.

Spa and recreational forest in the climatic health resort of Krakow am See

The establishment of a recreational and spa woodland area has reconsolidated Krakow am See's reputation as a state-approved climatic health resort. The 18-hectare forest was co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.

Schwaan meeting and event location

Through the LEADER program, the EU supports citizens' initiatives in rural areas. More than EUR 100 000 has been provided to build a combined meeting place and event venue in Schwaan, for instance.

Village shop Bernitt

A village shop was opened in Bernitter with around EUR 50 000 from the European Social Fund. Residents are now once again able to shop for everyday goods locally.
