This district, with its 14 towns and municipalities, is located in the southern Rhine-Main area and is a region with a growing population. It is regarded as economically strong, particularly due to its proximity to Frankfurt airport. The automotive sector is strongly represented in the district, but aerospace plants, as well as IT, logistics and chemical companies, are also to be found there. The district of Groß-Gerau is also home to the two largest nature conservation areas in Hesse: Mönchbruch and Kühkopf-Knoblochsaue. The culinary trademark of the region is asparagus, whose cultivation is facilitated by the region’s mild climate.

Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU

Vocational schools

European Regional Development Fund money has been used to improve the technical resources of vocational training establishments in the district. The aim is to improve the practical relevance of teaching by modernising hardware and software. There has also been direct and support for them from the European Social Fund (ESF) and under the Erasmus+ education programme.

Cooperation between retailers and the municipal job centre

In the district of Groß-Gerau many people have been able to find work again thanks to cooperation between retailers and the municipal job centre. The programme to help the long-term unemployed received ESF support between 2015 and 2020.

Nature conservation areas in Groß-Gerau

The district of Groß-Gerau includes many nature conservation areas belonging to the Natura 2000 network. The purpose of this EU-wide network of protected areas is to safeguard wild animals and plants and their habitats across borders.

Disadvantaged young people

A project to help young people in their local communities has received ESF funding. Its aim is to facilitate access to training and the labour market, in particular for disadvantaged young people.
