As the southernmost district of the Mittelfranken region, Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen is part of the Nuremberg Metropolitan Region. It is home to technology companies in the plastics processing, masonry construction and boilermaking sectors. Tourism and the production of renewable energy – such as in the Hahnenkamm wind farm, one of the largest in Bavaria – are playing an increasingly important role. The supplier industry in the district offers major European automobile manufacturers, among others, access to a wide variety of precision parts.
Examples of projects and initiatives supported by the EU
Participation of the Simon-Marius-Gymnasium Gunzenhausen in the Erasmus+ project ‚¡Abre los ojos!
In 2023, the EU provided the Simon Marius Gymnasium in Gunzenhausen with some EUR 33 400 to support its participation in the Erasmus+ project ‘¡Abre los ojos! – discover new cultures through Spanish’.
Regional juice bottler Billing
The EU provided EUR 200 000 in support to a juicing company in Billing in order to improve orchard fruit processing and marketing in the region. The company enables anyone to juice their own fruit and bottle it.
Vocational entrance assistance for the Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen region
The EU supported the career guidance services provided by Westmittelfranken’s GFI GmbH in the district of Weißenburg-Gunzenhausen. From April 2015 to July 2022, around half of the total costs, which were EUR 592 000, were covered by the European Social Fund.
Extension of the flood protection along the river Altmühl at Gunzenhausen
Between February 2017 and December 2020, the EU provided funding for the construction of flood defences along the River Altmühl. With the total costs amounting to around EUR 5.7 million, the EU made some EUR 1.32 million available from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
Former train station Weißenburg converted into a place for music classes and concerts
With a view to developing rural areas in a sustainable way, the EU awarded the ‘Musikbahnhof Weißenburg’ around EUR 136 000 to carry out work on rooms to be used by the music school and for concerts.
German class at the Stephani middle school at Gunzenhausen
At Stephani Middle School in Gunzenhausen, the EU is subsidising the compulsory all-day German class offered to pupils who have only basic German knowledge or none at all. The grant for the 2019/20 school year covered EUR 27 000 of the total costs, which were approximately EUR 53 000.

The EU has long been supporting the [vocational learning programme]led by the Stephani Middle School in Gunzenhausen with funding from the European Social Fund. In the programme, underachieving students who have fallen behind in their learning are offered individual support to obtain a school-leaving qualification. In the school years 2015/2016, 2016/2017 and 2017/2018, the EU grant amounted to EUR 31 000 per year.
